PioneerTown, California - Pappy & Harriet's Pioneer Palace

PappyHarrietsPioneertownPalace.jpgWriting about the fabulous Rumba Lady I found while thrifting in Joshua Tree brought to mind the joys of Pappy & Harriet's. Though an approximate 45-minute drive separates the two towns, it's difficult not to link them in my mind. There's much flux between the two in attitude, music and culture. In fact, you'll find many musicians who take the stage at Pappy & Harriet's call Joshua Tree home.

That said, let's focus on Pioneer Palace! I can't explain the incredible history of this special place any better than their website, so I'll let them take it away:

[The legendary Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace has been delighting locals and travelers alike since 1982, with its mesquite barbeque, live music, dancing and friendly service. There is also a long history here. In 1946, Pioneertown was founded by a group of Hollywood investors with dreams of creating a living movie set -- an 1870's frontier town with facades for filming and interiors open to the public.

On the outside were stables, saloons, and jails, and on the inside, were ice cream parlors, bowling alleys, and motels. Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Russell Hayden, and the Sons of the Pioneers (for whom the town was named) were some of the original investors and personalities who helped build and invent Pioneertown. More than 50 films and several television shows were filmed in Pioneertown throughout the 1940's and 1950's.

In 1946, where Pappy & Harriet's stands today, was a one-pump gas station. But it had a dual purpose. The facade was used as a "cantina" set for numerous western films well into the 1950s. In 1972, Harriet's mother, Francis Aleba, and her husband, John, purchased the building and opened "Cantina", a biker burrito bar that became a destination for bikers traveling to Big Bear and Las Vegas. Cantina rollicked for 10 years, and when it closed, Francis and John made sure the building stayed in the family.

In 1982, Harriet and her husband, Claude "Pappy" Allen, opened. "Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace," served family style Tex-Mex cuisine,
and brought musicians from all over the world to perform for their patrons. Today, Pappy & Harriet's continues the tradition of live music, great barbeque, and good times in memory of Pappy and all those who came before him.]

The bowling alley is a must see. At only four lanes, it's surely one of the smallest around - but it can't be matched in atmosphere, or Root Beer Floats. The venue itself is amazing, combining country vibes, a music venue and a little bit of dive bar added for good measure in a way I've never seen before. The margaritas come in mugs and the steaks are big enough to share. I've had many wonderful experiences here; most notably the Camp Out With Camper events. While PioneerTown sounds rather remote, it's really the proverbial hop, skip and a jump away from Palm Springs. Wherever you're coming from, this little gem is worth seeking out. Be sure to check their music calendar before arranging a visit - this little spot regularly hosts world-class bands.

Bisbee, Arizona - Screaming (Banshee) Delight

screaming-banshee-pizza-logo.jpegbanshee-interior.jpegScreaming Banshee Pizza - don't let the name fool you; this is one of the most delightfully relaxing places in town. Owners Christie and Kerri have done the impossible - making a new restaurant feel like it's been a part of the scene forever, in the very best sense. These gals have something you can't buy, yet is absolutely essential to a successful restaurant - impeccable taste. A welcoming air envelopes you from the moment you walk in the door and doesn't stop until you leave blissfully satiated. Great service, fun decor and an amazing wine and beer selection will make sure you get off to a good start. And the food? Oh, my god! Christie, Kerri and dough goddess Juliette put nearly a year's worth of research into perfecting their pizzas; their hard work shines through in every bite. Click for their menu - and don't forget to check the special board for the inventive combos. Their creativity never misses. Pizza is not all that's offered (though you'd be crazy not to try some) - large salads and delicious appetizers are also available. My boyfriend and I always say we're going to make a meal by selecting items off the app menu (which you could easily do), but we're always lured back to the amazing thin-crust pizza. It's difficult to break tradition with something so tantalizing. Well, I think I've exhausted my adjectives for the day. If this isn't enough of a rave review, I don't know what else to tell ya! One last pitch - owners and employees alike are all super cute. What goes better with a sit down meal than a fabulous pair of ta-tas?

Wow - Vegas On The Cheap! I Think I'm In Love...

cheapo_vegas_head_01.gifI'm in love with this site I just stumbled upon. I'm so excited, I had to share the news! Casino Boy writes informative, honest, up-to-date summaries of Las Vegas casinos; as well as detailed goings on of events on and off the Strip. This is an amazing find for a true Sin City aficionado - enjoy and pass it on! Here's a little more on Cheapo Vegas, from Casino Boy himself:

[Howdy, folks! Casino Boy here. I'll be your guide through magical Las Vegas. And it's good info, not a bunch of fluff. If it stinks, I say so!]

Lucky me - I have trips to Vegas planned in August and November. I have every intention of putting Casino Boy to work! xo

Portland, Oregon - The Perfect Storm

foster-burger.jpg
Beer, booze and (I'm not kidding) one of the best burgers you'll ever have the pleasure of eating? Count me IN. Include the lovely vibe, adorable servers, top of the line ingredients and gourmet fries and you have an ideal situation. Not only that, you'll also receive an education in the awesome old school version of the Portland music scene via the "vintage" posters lining the walls of the restaurant. This is an Andy Ricker joint - and that name signals serious quality to Portland foodies. If you're anywhere in the Oregon vicinity, make this a must-do on your list - you won't regret it. Full disclosure - I used to have a crush on Andy back in the day. Could I have been the wife of a burger tycoon? It's surely for the best, for numerous reasons, that I took the winding path to my adorable fiance (whose name is not Andy) - the last thing I need is free-wheelin' access whiskey and beef. A latter day Elvis and I would have gotten along just fine!

Portland, Oregon - The Appropriately Named Space Room

the-space-room.jpg
fresh-underpants.jpg

The Space Room Lounge is legendary. I've never had a one-night stand - but if I were to go that route, this would be the place I'd kick it off. The drinks are large and strong - if you have any qualms about getting it on, Fresh Underpants (the beverage above) will help settle your inhibitions. Not so much "settle" as completely rob you of them - but you'll never have a better time. The lounge is appropriately dark, with much of the light source coming from Christmas bulbs and video poker games - my favorite hue. There's a stunning wraparound mural depicting the scenery of Portland, from the downtown skyline to the ocean - in black light, no less. The booths are cozy, all the better to cuddle up to that stranger! The table service is both a blessing and a curse - the cute waitstaff will keep bringing you refreshing beverages until you beg for mercy. The Space Room is definitely one bar that benefitted greatly from the non-smoking law - sorry, cigarette lovers! The lounge was not for the faint of heart (or lung) pre-ban. Now it can be enjoyed by all - don't worry, you still can barely see across the bar. There's plenty to experience right outside the lounge doors, if you can ever get out of those comfy chairs - including Zach's Shack, the perfect late night eatery. (I hear there's food at the Space Room, but I've never tried any.) So book an assignation asap - just be sure to bring a designated driver!

Portland, Oregon - Dude Alert

beer-mongers-pdx.jpg
The Beer Mongers is a relatively new offering in Portland - and they couldn't have picked a better city in which to begin their business. The owners, both McMenamin brewers, are seriously knowledgeable about the art of beer. It definitely shows - their selection is out of this world! Rare options from all over the globe are chilling next to popular local microbrews. The beloved lowbrow standards are also available. The Beer Mongers have a unique setup - it's a store, but it's also a bar. You can pop in and grab a variety of beers to go - or you can stay on the premises and enjoy your amazing finds right on the spot. They also offer a few beers on tap. The owners recently added an actual bar setup to their space - in fact a "Bar Baptism Party" is happening this coming Saturday, May 8th. You'll be able to enjoy free snacks and tastings all day - and you can help christen the bar at 5 pm. You don't have to ask me twice! The only drawback (if you can call it that) is the decor - it's in serious need of a woman's touch, in my opinion. The guys have done a great job of creating a vibe - but it's seriously the most "dude-like" bar I have ever been in. That said, it certainly didn't detour us from hanging out for several hours. The lack of atmosphere hit us when we first walked in - by the end of the evening we were singing its praises. A few top-notch beers and personal attention from one of the owners certainly didn't hurt. He definitely had a strong interest in our gorgeous friend - but that doesn't mean he wouldn't have been equally as attentive if it had only been me and my boyfriend. My honey can talk beer! Portland is both a mellow and competitive town - incredible bars and restaurants are available on every corner of the city. I think The Beer Mongers has what it takes to be the go-to place for craft beers. I know I'll definitely be going back.
